As a follow on to our Lift Formula debate http://www.helitorque.com/portal/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3068&highlight=

I thought we could take a look at how lift and drag are generated by wings and rotor blades rather than how to calculate its magnitude

We've established its dependant upon at least

Quote:

The Shape, Speed, Size of the aerofoil, and how it presents itself to the air.
Air density figures in there somewhere.


but what actually makes it produce lift ?

Anyone care to take a stab at it ?

Gonna jump right in here feet first, just to get this started.

Its the deflection/acceleration of air, the downward component of which is creating "lift". This is a result of the old "every action has an equal and opposite reaction".

Hmmmm.... So the question was "what makes it produce lift?" Have I missed the trap?

Surely Bernoulli's is the result of the aerofoil affect in the relative wind, as you say the deflection/acceleration of air.

Throw in Bernoulli's and you've got lift.

Have I missed something?

Sorry Mungo, I thought you were implying that purely Bernoulli's was what is creating the lift, ie low pressure on top of the wing high pressure underneath, and the wing gets sucked up. If thats not where you were heading, then I appologise. Eye Slam

Not to worry, I suppose I was implying that wasn't I. I guess the original question drove me that way. It was the 'actual production' of lift that took me that way.
