I recently purchased the Oxford ATPL Navigation CD Rom in order to better prepare, but while doing some of the questions on Vertices I came across these.
A GREAT CIRCLE CROSSES THE EQUATOR AT LONGITUDE 030W THE DIRECTION OF THE GREAT CIRCLE AT THE EQUATOR IS 035T. AN AIRCRAFT FOLLOWING THIS GREAT CIRCLE WILL REACH ITS HIGHEST LATITUDE (N OR S) AT WHICH POSITION ?
a. 35S 120W
b. 55S 060E
c. 35N 120W
d. 55N 060E
I went for D. If you are crossing the Equator at 035T then you are flying toward the North. Latitude must be 90 degrees - 35 = 55N
Longitude must be 90 degrees further to the East from the point called 030W which would make the longitude 60E.
I got a big red X for that one.
A GREAT CIRCLE HAS A NORTHERN VERTEX OF 70N 130E WHAT IS THE SOUTHERN VERTEX?
a 35S 120W
b 55S 060E
c 35N 120W
d 55N 060E
I was under the impression that the Northern vertex of 70N would mean a Southern Vertex Latitude of 70S, also that the the anti meridian of 130E
