Dear All

Further on from our conversations about next year, the idea was brought up for a summer flyin to the Isle of wight maybe for the weekend.

I'm over there for Christmas so will investigate options for hotels. Currently can't think of any with suitable space for heli's but will have a look around and will have chat with the guys at Bembridge airport.

I won't start asking for names yet but would people rather have a hotel with heli parking or land at either airport and have transport to the hotel.

I'll post my findings after Christmas.

Happy Xmas!!

Martin

Thanks, oi_martin, for posting the Isle of Wight idea. I have flown to Sandown many years ago, but in a "plank" Shhh

What date are you going over to IofW? And will you have access to a computer over there?

Same here. It would be good to put something on the calendar.

Any dates in mind?

Mrs Oi_Martin has sorted out the dates for visiting the outlaws for 2007 to equally space them and clash with her mum birthday.

To give everyone plenty of notice how does August Bank Holiday sound, could be a long weekend. If an idea of a weekend doesn't clash then I may have to persuade Mrs Oi_M to move dates or an extra trip over. May be able to thumb a lift from a passing helicopter. Happy to contribute to fuel.

Have done a bit of enquiring about places to stay. There is a hotel in the centre of the island which has a helipad called The Swainston Manor but their website appears not to work very well or when I tried not at all. But this hotel seems to be in the middle of nowhere near Calbourne.

I believe there is a hotel to the west of the island near Freshwater but at present don't know the name. Will be over there again in February so will check some out then. Warner Holidays have a place at Bembridge but that may prove costly if it was a long weekend. There's a couple of other hotels in Bembridge or there's Sandown.

Had a word with the airport manager at Bembridge about a potential visit. If we contacted them before the weekend they should be able to put together a discount deal for the landing fees and overnight parking. Could probably arrange transport over there. Bembridge has Jet A1 and Avgas fuel available by bowser.
I have the contact details for someone else at Bembridge to suggest that they may want to combine our visit with a possible rotary fly in to Bembridge to get more helis over there.
Somebody told me that the B-N group has bought military helicopters of Thruxton so they have links with helis now .

Could do the visit to India Juliet at the same time.

Certainly food for thought, should be able to get this one off the ground !!

Has anyone seen "the Coat".

Ideas please and I'll look into it in the next month.

Martin

I'd be up for this, assuming I had my licence by then (which is dependent on finding a new job now!).

And also up for the trip to see India Juliet.

Just had a quick look at the Priory Bay Hotel website - looks very nice and the rooms aren't too expensive either! Good find, SteelCity Bravo!

As for landing fees Dunno WhirlyGirl is the one for negotiating Rock On!

PS: Note to PilotWolf - I thought MrsPW2B would have been MrsPW by now Rolling Eyes

I did already have Priory Bay hotel in mind and have already been there to discuss a weekend there at the beginning of last year when the idea came up before.

The helipad is on the edge of the Par 3 golf course and there is really only room for one or at a big stretch and extremely tight parking room for two R22's. When I spoke to the owner, he said he would be prepared to close one of the golf course holes for a weekend during low season but really Easter would be the cut off point.

Priory Bay is only about a mile from the outlaws house. One option may be to land one heli at Priory Bay and have the others park at Bembridge. I could do the transfers or use an R44 for shutttle. I guess that means everyone arriving together. I could pop along there again in February and have another chat, they may have another solution.

I'll gather numbers of people and heli's and see what they say.

Hey check this out...

Put the postcode PO34 5BU into google earth and there are 3 helis parked on the golf course! Laughing

Fancy that, they were there at the time the photo was taken. Looks like an R44 and two Squirrels.

I'm sure I've seen one more purple R44 at Heli Air at some point, but you're right, they're not all that common and WhirlyGuy said exactly the same when he saw the pic.

Looks like it could be an interesting place to fly to.
