I had lunch with Frank in the Summer whilst he was over here. (yeah yeah I know - what a name dropper Rolling Eyes ) He hinted on a new machine to fit the light to middle weight role of the B206. He suggested that the biggest problem was what power plant to use or what was available.

He's loath to go turbine due to the inherent costs, and although he liked the idea of a diesel, they were too heavy in the frame.

So...This might be his cunning plan eh? Cool

Seems logical Confused

I think frank should use a Rand Cam rotory diesel engine...

Can also be built run on LP, CNG, Gas, Alcohol, hydrogen etc all depending on compression ratio...

If he cant get that yet two turbocharged mazda rotorys...

Ethanol would be a good choice. It's been used for some 10 years now on several fixed wings and has a lot of promise in it. Converting a factory avgas piston is very simple requiring only minor adjustments and the engine can be converted back to avgas with a slight mixture adjustment. The only setback is that ethanol-converted engines have 5-20% shorter range than straight avgas ones.

I've heard that Wankels are rather unreliable and prone to failures, as well as being rather fuel inefficient and having cooling problems. The story goes that the only reason Mazda is still producing them has more to do with public image than any real technological advantage. Some Diamond Katanas were fitted with two Wankels, but so far they haven't prooved to be much of a success. There were few aircraft converted to that configuration.
