20-Apr-11

Washington, DC – Bristow Group was awarded the 2011 National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) Safety in Seas Award today, recognizing their outstanding contribution to the safety of life offshore for energy workers through their “Target Zero” program of training and safety tracking.

Bristow’s award-winning nomination was selected by a blue-ribbon panel of judges from the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Academy of Science’s Marine Board, and a former senior regulatory official with the Minerals Management Service.

“Target Zero” is a comprehensive cultural and training system that seeks to achieve zero accidents, zero harm to people and zero harm to the environment across Bristow’s operations. Building on statistical data that indicated human error contributed to 4 out of 5 accidents or incidents, Bristow’s “Target Zero” has reduced the rate of air accidents in for example the Gulf of Mexico from 2 reportable air accidents and one air incident in 2007 to zero accidents or incidents, with similar results in subsequent years. Bristow has achieved a 47% improvement year on year in Lost Work-time Cases, with overall improvement from 2007 – 2009 of 88%. When it comes to the environment, Bristow’s “Target Zero has maintained a record of zero environmental incidents and has stepped up pro-active efforts to ensure this stays constant.

NOIA President Randall Luthi said “Bristow has demonstrated that safety is priority number one, and their commitment to this goal was evident in the statistical improvements they achieved. In addition, their work is deserving of this award because it is easily transferable to other offshore operations, potentially lifting the safety of offshore workers to new heights. We applaud the fact that the Coast Guard, the National Academy of Sciences and respected offshore expert Bud Danenberger unanimously chose Bristow for this year’s award and we congratulate Bristow for their valuable contribution to the enhancement of offshore safety and responsible environmental stewardship.”

About the Safety in Seas Award: Acknowledging the significant contributions made by modern-day pioneers in their pursuit of the ocean frontier, Compass Publications, Inc., publishers of Sea Technology Magazine, established the NOIA Safety and Seas Award in 1978. The award recognizes excellence among those who, by their actions, design or influence, have contributed to improving the safety of life offshore. The award, now in its 32nd year, continues to serve as a testimony to the high standards associated with the rapid growth of the ocean industries.

About NOIA: NOIA is the only national trade association representing all segments of the offshore industry with an interest in the exploration and production of energy resources on the nation’s outer continental shelf. The NOIA membership comprises more than 250 companies engaged in business activities ranging from producing to drilling, engineering to marine and air transport, offshore construction to equipment manufacture and supply, telecommunications to finance and insurance.
