Just seen a Honda Clarity on Top Gear - hydrogen fuel cell technology (only available in the US of A right now but definitely the way forward) so it's completely electric - 0-60 [FWIW] c. 9 secs and a long way on a tank full.

BREAK pedal PW????

I know what you mean PW, when someone tries to drive up your car's bloomin' exhaust pipe! I just love it though when I put my foot on the gas pedal and the car goes into supersonic mode leaving the car behind almost at a standstill (but then I look at the mph left for fuel Shocked )

My Jeep runs on LPG so at the moment is around 49p a litre - and was when petrol and derv were around 1.20 a litre Smile

The old Landrover we had at the ambulance station used to spit fire out of the exhaust if you changed down a gear and then accelerated hard! People tended to drop back a bit after you'd done that!

I miss the blue lights from the old car too... Sad

they brought over the MK4 golf and jetta TDi and canada went wild, 1000km on a single tank

Just wait till next year when VW launch the new Mk6 Golf and especially the Bluemotion Golf. The current MK5 Bluemotion Golf has a book value of 64mpg but the computer said 69.4mpg on the M25 going to Stansted.

The MK6 Bluemotion is likely to be even more fuel efficient. I'm a huge VW fan, hence why I have a 2003 Passat and get in the mid 50's on a long run.

Being a company fleet manager, I've spent many hours examining industry news about Green motoring.

Sorry PW - it (pedantry) just comes with this model of 'me' - standard feature! The 'WhirlyGuy' model has it as standard, also the human 'F' series known as Jen seems to have it fitted!

Jen - do you mean the Tesla? I missed that part of the show and really did *sigh* when James said blah blah Honda - thinking I'd missed the best bits but for me, seeing that hydrogen car WAS the best bit.
I think the Tesla (c/o Lotus in the UK) was the greatest step forward in making an electric car 'cool' as it's a sports car (you'll have picked up the cons with James' rather unfair commentary generalising battery propulsion ref "charging it up all night and being able to drive 20 yards at 10 mph before having to plug it in for another 8 hours") and with a 0-60mph of under 4 seconds that (for some people) will hit the button After the Tesla, they (it was on their website) say they will be looking at developing a saloon car for the middle market so the sports car was the introduction to what can be achieved.
The Hydrogen technology HAS to be the best as the only by-product is water, the only problem being the amount of energy (at the moment) in extracting/compressing hydrogen. I guess this is the same stumbling block as with making batteries for electric cars. There was mention somewhere (was it on TopGear?) of some other companies using their wealth to improve batteries (Intel? Shell?) and it's possible that the two could be quite useful in overthrowing the dependence on oil for transport. Good for Honda, I hope it is developed and mass produced.

Yep - it was the Tesla. It was fast enough to beat the Elise (on the straight anyway) with 0-60 in 3.something seconds. Only did 200 miles between charges though and then needed 16 hours to charge, so as Clarkson pointed out it would take 4 days to get to Scotland. Oh, and it was 90k. Cute though...

I drive a basic mk4 Golf, which has done its best over the years to disprove the widely held belief that VWs are reliable cars. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Yep! Sorry, but that's regarded as the least reliable Golf VW have ever made Smile

Dare I say it Shocked We are on our third GOLF and, so far, have been extremely pleased with them. The GOLF before this latest one did a huge amount of mileage, but still performed 1st class Cool

When we change this lovely GOLF GT in 2010, or before, we (I meant me!) will get the GOLF GTi Smile When you get to the age of us old fogies, the insurance isn't a problem Cool

The only thing I know about Golf is that you chase a little white ball around which you hardly find to then throw it away into a little hole in the ground. Laughing

I was always a VW bug man myself (way back when they were really the "Bug" rear engine.

Graduated to Bavarian Motors. I couldn't spell V O L K S W A G O N.
BMW is easier. Laughing

Not wanting to be too picky on this one but what were you doing at 80MPH in the first place? Wink

Talking on my mobile while reading the map, eating a burger and trying to retune the stereo.
