Just took the plunge and switched to the iPhone. I'm addicted.
Thought I'd start a thread on really useful aviation apps for the iPhone, in case you have some you'd like to share.
There are a couple of nice instructional aids like one where you can turn the phone into a VOR tracker and using the internal GPS you pick a VOR and see which radial you're on. You can tune it, track it and everything! Could be useful for the classroom!
There are tons of GPS related apps and lots of free weather ones as well as flight planning, but I've yet to go through them all.
What I could really use is an iPhone version of something like Notam Plot.
Look forward to seeing what develops here and finding out how many other pilots use the iPhone for aviation related stuff.

How about throwing that call open to all Smartphones and PDAs? We're not all iPhoneaholics. I've just taken delivery of a nice new Nokia 5800, for example. _________________ J. |

I'm fond of Flightplan (www.warbred.com). It's not free but it's handy. |

Maybe check PilotWizz out, it´s free. Planning, weight and balance, conversions, etc...
Americans have some pretty stuff, their AIP, charts, flight plans. We´ll get some of those someday...hopefully.

I've been playing with Pilot Wizz Pro and it's really nice. The author has lateral W&B capability in the current beta version. Since the school I'm at has several helicopters it's easy to plug in pilot, passenger and fuel and have the W&B plot displayed for any bird you've got entered. |

I must admit I have downloaded flight control and I am pretty hooked on it! I have only managed to land 70 aircraft without crashing any so far though!
A friend has told me about another couple of useful aviation apps though:
Weather Maps (free) - like the mesoscale but very simlar to the BBC weather map actually
GB Locate (£0.59) - converts any lat / long to grid reference. Quite useful.
My favourite is Aero Weather (free). Really useful for quickly checking all the latest TAFs and METARs when you're in the middle of nowhere! It even uses your GPS location to find all the nearest ones.
Pilot Whizz (also free) is very good - can even do W&B but I haven't managed to programme it all in yet.
Loving the phone - oh it makes calls too.

70 - jeepers.. I can barely get beyond 55.. it's so frustrating.
Agreed, aeroweather is the best I found so far too.
Couple of handy GPS trackers too - will plot your path on google maps as you go, so others can check in on you.
Handy also for seeing exactly where you were, when you thought you were somewhere else.. |

GPS trackers... yeah that's pretty amazing. Good for flight following... not so good if you've disappeared down the pub after work instead of going home to cook the dinner

I use AeroWeather, PilotWizPro and the great new Airbox Runway and will be getting the new Airbox which looks fantastic as my primary GPS. I also find Time Calc handy. |
