My apologies, just been looking back at the metars and it doesn't make any sense that I was advised not to fly on Sunday 15th nov 2009 , I may have made an incorrect entry as Saturday 14th wind was gusting strong at EGBJ.
so perhaps it does pay to match the wind to keep the cushion right under you.
I really couldn't say with any authority whether matching windspeed is of benefit or hindrance. As with all such things, I'm sure there will be a multitude of variables but it would be interesting to see some empirical data.
In any event, slow is a prudent choice if you have any doubts. Decisions can often speak more about a pilot's competence than simple handling ability.
