A GRANT of £100,000 will help transform the county’s air ambulance base at Coventry Airport.

The plans will turn a small work space into a multi-functional area for crews at Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

It will provide a hub for the running of the life saving operation as well as a fully equipped training room, with an interactive white board, which will be hired out to third parties to provide additional income for the charity.

The new work space will also boast new changing rooms and medical stores.

Grants came from three trusts, General Charities of the City of Coventry, Stratford Town Trust and the Soroptimist International of Rugby Charitable Trust, to improve working areas at the operational base.

Dominic Tolley, the county’s air ambulance director of operations, said: “The crew base has been in need of a face lift or ‘base lift’ for a while.

“So this refurbishment is great news for our crew.I know that the newly refurbished high-tech training room will be highly valuable to crews as well as an income to the charity.”

Soroptimist International of Rugby Charitable Trust donated £75,000 to the refurbishment, bringing the total raised by the group for the air ambulance over the last three years to more than £250,000.

Chairwoman Helen Creery said: “The trustees are delighted to support the redevelopment of the air ambulance helicopter base at Coventry Airport to make it compliant with Care Quality Commission standards for registration.

“There will be an upgrade to the helipad and improved storage areas for the crews. The vital service provided by the air ambulance will further improve as a result of this redevelopment.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a quality service in our area and the trustees had no hesitation in backing the project.”

The county’s air ambulance is a registered charity and it costs £1.5 million a year to keep the vital service running, without funding from the lottery or government.

Crews cater for 1.2 million people in the area.
