Turbines are generally more environmentally friendly than pistons in terms of exhaust gas emission, since Jet A burns cleaner and doesn't contain the same anti-detonation components (in terms of quantity and composition) as 100LL.
However, concerning noise, most turbine helis will almost always be louder I think, because the higher power developed by the turbine requires a larger rotor to absorbe it and turn it into useful lift - and those can be noisy, especially if they have more than two blades.
Yet, as far as I have experienced, turbine helis that are more-or-less in a similar power range as pistons, are not all that louder. The MD500D is not that much louder than an R-44 (as far as I remember), given that the MD500 has a five-blade main rotor and almost 100 SHP more - and considering that the R-44s piston thumping is replaced by the turbine whine.
