We were going to have a fly-in day - a Helimeet at EGSY on 3rd October but there was a severe Wx warning and it was cancelled. (As it was, the Wx came on Monday).

It was also going to be a competition day, with a skill test (balloons into buckets - there's a new one!) a slalom course or similar and a Nav exercise in the area.

It will be re-scheduled for soon but when I know more I'll post it so keep yer mincers peeled.

Sounds like a good idea

Just one word of caution, check rules with CAA you may need dispensations.
Chech your insurances.

Wellesbourne to Sheffield is 73 miles ATCF - I just spread out all me maps on the hall floor and measured it!

What would be the CAA's fly in the ointment for this? Dragon Helis are the organisers - they have an AOC at the Airport here - I'm sure they'll have cleared it with the CAA if there was any need to do so, it would have been a couple of weeks ago now.

Is that nautical miles or statute miles?

I think blme was referring to slaloms etc. needing a dispensation. I don't know much about that side of it myself but something like that would probably be classed as a display and those kinds of things usually require special permission. But if Dragon Helicopters have organised it all, then they have probably cleared it with the CAA already...

OK - Here's the script that was sent out to us from Dragon outlining the events of the day;

This is a family event ??? bring your family and friends along to see you demonstrate your helicopter prowess as you participate in the day???s activities, which will include:

A thirty minute map reading sortie. Think of Anneka Rice???s Treasure Hunt and put yourself in her seat!
A thirty minute obstacle course suspending a bucket of water from the helicopter, threading it through a series of challenging obstacles
An aviation related Trivia Quiz
Food and Refreshments
Meet your fellow aviators!
Sheffield City Airport are also advertising this as a helicopter fly in day ??? see lots of other helicopters in the circuit!!

The overall scores from the three events will be combined. The highest score will result in the award of the prestigious Dragon Helicopters Champion Pilot Award!

Qualified PPL pilots must fly as a pair - impress your friends! Students must fly with an instructor. All flights will be charged at standard student or self fly rates, as appropriate.

So - slalom was my interpretation, but that's pretty close eh?

Whether it will be held this side of Christmas I don't know, I'll ask on Monday when I go in.

Liam: last I'd heard, he left as he wasn't enamoured of their practices. He was still doing some freelancing for them, but that was in 2003. I had a good chat with him at Helitech when he flying their LongRanger.

And are you sure that Dragon actually hold their own AOC? Last time they used my machine, they were lunching off Aeromega's certificate, but they could have now got their own.

BTW IIUC, you don't hold an AOC 'for a location', you just have an AOC.
