I am def. up for that too WG. Sunday is best for me to be honest as this work thing gets in the way otherwise.

When you have a date in mind I will make sure I am about for it!

HC.

Just looking and wondered if there was any further plans for Karting?

Am I right in thinking that Thruxton is one of the group of tracks owned by Jonathan Palmer (who I also believe is a keen heli pilot)?

I think the problem has been co-ordinating people's availability with good weather and access to helicopters!

Perhaps we should just pick a date and hope for the best. What does everybody think? Maybe a Sunday if they do the karting on Sundays? Or would a different day be preferable?

Best wishes,

Is everyone happy with Thruxton.

I could amble down one weekend and get some more info. They have got a good website. Posting links have never been my strong point.

I could enquire with the airfield if Helicopters have to park on the airfield or there is somewhere closer to the Karting.
Can we get an idea of numbers going and how many helicopters there may be.

Martin

Isn't the karting on the airfield? Or at least a short walk away? I landed there a couple of months back and on the way to the café I'm sure I could see the track.

I'd be happy to go to Thruxton.

Hi Folks

Just thought I'd shed some more light on Karting at Thruxton after reading all the comments/questions.

Heli area south at Thruxton is situated next to the karting centre, no idea if you can park up there though? Never realiased it was there until we flew out from there this morning. This map

www.multimap.com/maps/#t=l&map=51.20623,-1.60452|17|8&loc=GB:51.20882:-1.58433:14|thruxton|Thruxton,%20SP11%208

is very old and doesn't even show the karting centre but gives you a general idea. The karting centre is now where all the trails are to the South West Corner. Vehicle access is by seperate road outside the circuit but believe you can make it on foot through the circuit.

It is normally very heavily booked at weekends and I believe it is fully booked now through August as I enquired for a stag weekend 2 weeks ago with no joy, so worth making calls now to check before too much gets planned would be advised.

Depending on the date I may drive up and say hello!
Cheers
Matt

I can't believe we never got around to this Karting trip. Anyone still fancy it? I say we just set a date in June or July and just go for it.

Here's a link to the Thruxton diary for the next couple of weeks. Seems they have some availability on Sundays. They do something called a Weekend Grandprix.

Depending on how long the Karting goes on for we could even opt to fly onto somewhere else afterwards to grab a bite to eat?

Let me know your thoughts and we'll just pick a date out. There aren't that many Sundays in the summer so surely we can manage to choose one??

You'd have to give me a head start on the afterwards bit, my Passat isn't as fast as the heli's.

But certainly up for it. I even have my own crash helmet and race suit, only because being so big when I have been before the helmets didn't usually fit and the race suits put my voice up a couple of Octaves.

We're working on putting together nice a collection of summer trips for our self-fly-hirers over the next few days, so I'll make some enquiries and maybe we can combine them with the HeliTorque trips to get the numbers up a bit. The more the merrier I say!

Talking about the Isle of Wight too, if things pan out, so hopefully we can get the social side of flying back up and running again! We're long overdue a get-together.

I'm looking at somewhere around the 6th July at the moment, so I'm just waiting until there's someone in the office who can tell me if there is availability on that day. There is a morning session or afternoon session. Not sure what they class as the start time for afternoon but that might be better to give everybody a chance to arrive - you know what the weather can be like early in the morning! I believe the experience lasts a few hours, depending on how well you do in the practice laps and first round, but I've never done it before so I don't really know how it works.

Also need to check how it fits in with some of the folks from Coventry who are interested in coming along. So potentially I'm looking at Sunday 6th July, subject to availability, but we could use the 13th as an alternative.

As another idea, there is a hotel called The Coppleridge Inn which I'm told has a lot of landing space, and is about 25nm from Thruxton. This might make a nice place to go and get some food afterwards provided they are serving! Essebourne Manor is another option and is only 8nm from Thruxton. Looking at Google Earth they seem to have a lot of space to land but would have to make some enquiries. I'm not sure if there's anywhere at the race track to eat (apart from the airfield cafe maybe) and I just thought it would be nice to be able to chill out and get some food after a hard day on the track! What does everybody think?

Sarah

They probably have availability as its British Grand Prix day, it may be a busy day for charter pilots.

Ah. In that case I might be working myself and we may have to make it the week after! I will make some enquiries as to availability on Monday.
