This afternoon was rather unusual - I ran to the window on hearing rotors overhead (not so unusual!!), only this time I noticed the air ambulance was a bit on the low side... and that it was letting down in the park right across the road from where I live!
So I rushed out to have a look, camera in tow. I was mistakenly identified by a number of school kids as "some journalist from the BBC" - they were quite disappointed when I told them I was a mere CPL student. I really felt for the crew trying to defend the heli from these little hooligans!! Even the police were having a hard job keeping them at bay.
I have a lot of admiration for HEMS - they say they are only doing their job but I think what they do is amazing, and luckily for the poor chap who I believe came off his motorbike they were there to give him the best possible chance.
Had a little chat with the pilot - always nice to meet a fellow aviator! Obviously I asked him to check out the helitorque site, so hopefully he's reading this now! We could do with a few more EMS pilots on here - pop in and say "hi" if you have time!
Its always good to see EMS aircraft doing their job. I wish the public would just leave well alone and let them do their job. They are a vital part of the emergency services.
The speed at which they transfer a patient to hospital greatly increases their chances of a better recovery. It's all to do with the Golden Hour.
Our local air ambulance has just been relocated from White Waltham airfield to RAF Benson, alongside the Thames Valley police ASU. It now gives them access to the RAF's fuel at a reduced cost.
At a hospital in our city on windy days 20kts or so the the air ambulance lands in the park across the street from the hospital rather than 4 or 5 stoiries up on the helipad . The first time i saw this i was puzzled as to way they were air evacuating a person with the hospital entrance right across the street for a minute .
