Did anyone fly into Silverstone today for the British Grand Prix.

We were working at Turweston and understood that all the arrival slots were booked by the end of last week for Silverstone and apparently they ran out of fuel part way through the day. We had thirteen helis into Turweston. The furthest was either deepest Cornwall or Newcastle.

I didn't fly in, but I did go (yesterday too). Saw some amazing machines - I think I saw a Mil at one point!

I have some photo's, but as some of you know I am not a big photographer, so what the Nikon S6 took is all I have. Will try and upload some tomorrow though, especially of the Blue Eagles display on Saturday.

Didn't realise you were there too Craig, we could have met up!

A Merlin came in before the race today, and was joined shortly afterwards by 2 Army Air Corps machines.

I've got some photos too, will upload them in the week.

Hey guys make sure you add the photos to the Helicopters at Work thread we have going in the Torque, Chat & Chill area. Goal is to make it bigger than the one on Pprune.

Craig or Craig

Could anyone go out to the Heliport area or did you need a pass for that area.

There were shuttles operating all day yesterday from Aynho coming through the Turweston overhead.

Thanks

Martin

Was it "only" a merlin - looked so much bigger. Yes if we knew each other were going to be there we should have met up.

Saw the two Army Air Corps machines go out and come back - they were picking the Red Arrows pilot's up and bringing them back to watch the GP!.

Where did you sit RC, I was in Farm which was perfect for a sight of the HeliPort.

Martin - think you needed a pass, or at least a reason! Mind you, on the saturday they were doing pleasure flights for 35 each. Looked like a Jet Ranger with Flip Flop paint was doing them.

i'm a huge motorracing fan and competitor - which brings me to my question.......

With a PPL(H) is it possible to fly into events like the British Grand Prix, Superbikes at Thruxton etc etc?

Are the landing fees very very expensive?

And would they let you in with a R22 or R44?

thanks

For the British GP at Silverstone, yes, yes and yes!

R22/R44 is no problem. Neither is PPL(H). Although I believe you have to attend a briefing the week prior to the event. Last year, I seem to remember the fees were of the order of 400 for an R44! As you would imagine, the fee varies depending on heli. (If memory serves, there was a fee for landing, one for parking and one for departure.) HCGB members were entitled to a 50% discount on that.

Crikey! I thought it was CPL / ATPL only. I wouldn't want to be in there as a low houred PPL - might be OK if you had a few hundred hours though... its organised chaos in there!
