thumbup Not sure if this is the right place for this, if not could one of the WGs put it in the right place please, thanks Smile

Who would be up for getting in a helicopter and trying to balance an egg on a spoon (a small teaspoon mounted on the front somewhere) or trying a pedal turn keeping the landing lights shining on a marked spot on the ground???

i know Whirlygirl had a hover challenge day at helicentre coventry for non pilots to try their hands at hovering which was a great success.

Now i'm thinking of arranging something similar to what i've seen on youtube (not the crashes) and apparently already happens in america (is that right AB?) where pilots come together at an arranged place and time with all the right paperwork and have a 'fun day'

Right now i'm just pitching the idea to see what response i get - if it's positive then i'll talk to those with experience and contact the CAA and other governing bodies and do all the boring stuff so you don't have to. #Sleep

May look at getting it hosted at another event if there's enough interest. Please leave comments and any ideas and perhaps where you think would be the best location if not your local airfield, cheers
Idea Cool Helicopter sunny

Sounds like something a bit different to the Helicopter Championships doesn't it?

We could have the Helitorque Games! Great idea!

sounds fun, although I'm not convinced my skill level isn't better suited to going to the beginners hover challenge and pretending I've never flow before Heli Boy Laughing

Wouldn't it be funny if we turned up to one of these pretending we didn't know anything about helicopters, and then scaring the hell out of the instructor by mysteriously becoming brilliant in a matter of minutes! Laughing

Mind you, I wouldn't have much luck - everybody knows who I am!! You only have to search for R44 glass cockpit on google image search and my face comes up on page one! Laughing Laughing

I did do that once with juggling. There was a guy at a friend's party doing a bit of jugging and I asked him to show me how to do it. I couldn't keep it up for long though before I started doing a few tricks Laughing

I once did it with a magician but ended up making myself completely disappear and even I didn't know where I was, never again!! Wink

Yes, we have been known to get together to make complete fools out of ourselves trying to make a helicopter due things it was not meant to do (naturally in safety). Laughing

Any event that promotes good, solid, safe pilot technique will be fantastic to arrange. When pilots enter these events, they usually come away with understanding more about their limitations and the capabilities of the machine they fly.

After some aviation events, I have known pilots to seek out an instructor for some solid dual. So the underlying benefit is always there.

Good luck. Go for it.

I think we should have a "mullen wine glass" balancing event on the front of the skid Laughing Laughing

I've heard you fly better than you give yourself credit. Very Happy

Hey Sarah,
I googled "R-44 glass cockpit" and came up with Mark's face, with pink hair!. ???? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Well, how about setting up some cones like a driving course and have the copter weave through them in hover, or a balloon busting contest where a long sharp pin is tapped to the front of the skid and the copter tries to pop balloons along a course under a time limit.

How about a "threading the needle" event. Have a helicopter approach and attempt to set the skids down between two lines of cones without disturbing them.

Have you seen the one on You Tube where the copter pops the top off a beer bottle with an opener on the front of the skid? Cute. Takes a steady "stick" to do it.

There are so many things, but what you must always do (being a complete safety advocate) is make sure that if something goes wrong, the copter can set down safely.

Any props used, must be selected so that they will easily collapse under the copters weight without causing damage. Objects must also be heavy enough not to be pulled up into the rotors!

Remember.....The sponsor of the event is responsible for safety!

Safety issues like those above have to be planned into the event.

You should also have a "Pilot Waiver' prepared in which they assume the liability for damage: to the helicopter resulting from any activity in the event, and/or persons/property.

An event as you desire takes much planning, and naturally the approval of local authorities, but it can be done, and it is a lot of fun.

Thanks AB, yep been giving it a lot of thought - i'm going to leave the post on for 24 hrs and see how many people say they're in - i've got a number in my head, if that many people say they're up for it i'll start tomorrow - Hopefully have the first one next summer, love the balloon idea in a certain time limit, great!

And yeh saw the youtube video; here it is for those who haven't yet

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=69oNGrQEnxg

this one is probably not the one to use when pitching the idea to the CAA - could have put a new door in the hanger or the camera guy could have had a haircut !

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sy6_-i-QiMo

and it appears everyones at it

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iD3bJXvf9Zg
