Man dies in helicopter crash
27 August 2005

A Shenandoah family watched in horror last night as one of its members plunged to his death in a helicopter crash on their farm.

He was one of two men, one middle-aged and the other in his 20s, aboard a small two-seater Robinson helicopter which crashed into a paddock only 100m from a farm house near Murchison about 5pm yesterday.

The crash site, about 20m from State Highway 65, was under guard last night. Civil Aviation inspectors will visit the scene this morning to begin an investigation.

Police did not release the name of the man killed in the crash last night but The Press understands he is a local farmer.

Family friends, who did not want to be named, said some of the farmer's family had seen the crash.

A man in his 20s was transported to Nelson Hospital with serious leg injuries, St John Ambulance Canterbury operations manager Tony Dowell said.

Sergeant Jeffrey Meldau, of the Nelson police, said emergency services were on the scene within minutes. There was no fire, he said.

Police were unable to confirm how the accident occurred, or why the men were flying at the time.

The helicopter was badly damaged in the crash and was last night covered in foam due to a spillage of Avgas.

One lane of State Highway 65 was closed while emergency services worked at the scene.
