I passed my helicopter private add-on checkride this morning! Now to start licking slowly at the commercial ice-cream cone.

The official answer is yes. The real answer is sort-of. The total hour requirements are reduced from 40 (for initial helicopter private) to 35 for an "Add-on Rating", but I'm generally a pretty quick learner and it still took me almost 50 to do the add-on, so the minimums are almost moot, I'd say. In addition there are some requirements eliminated from the checkride, e.g. cross country planning and radio work, which are at least in principle the same as for airplanes. The truth of the similarities there are, of course, open to debate. In any case, what I technically earned was a "Rorotcraft-helicopter" rating on my private pilot certificate.

First lesson in the R44 today. The familiarity is there, but the difference in feel from the R22 is neat. Really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend having a go at it to anyone out there with only R22 time in the logbook.
