The setup is completely different to last year - we were trying to get our heads round it as well!

Last year the show area was to the south of 26/08, between the two 'HP's marked on the taxiways, and we parked to the south of the show area.

This year the "H" seems to be to the North of the airfield. I wonder if they'll let go straight in at low level since we'll be coming from the North. How did you come in last year? Did you have to use the runway? I would have thought coming in from the North-West would be the only way we can avoid the show area and the main runways, but I am still trying to get my head around the airfield chart!!!

We just used the runway last year, which didn't seem to be a problem as we were about the last in, arriving between the model display and the main event. If I remember rightly it was an approach from the North, I picked a spot about 2/3rds of the way down 18 which was abeam the parking area and then just hover taxied across.

This year Craig is flying in, but if the runway in use is 18 again I imagine that he will just aim for the threshold and then hover across to the H. If it is 36 I expect that we will still aim for the threshold, but approach over the runway. From the briefing it doesn't look like they will use 26/08. We are approaching from the East, so it doesn't make much difference which runway is in use. I can see that pproaching 36 from the north means that you will have to go a bit of a long way around...

You could alwys try an overhead join if you don't mind doubling your flight time and getting dizzy!

Last year we held to the NE (Oxford) until the model display was finished but then from memory we kept well N and positioned to the NW to come in on the stated right hand circuit and avoid the villages.

We sort of half used the runway, as noone else was moving and the marshaller wanted us to the SE of the show area then right turn to land to the S.

This year looks like position to the NW-ish and then avoid the runway, straight in low level to the H to me Very Happy

(Has anyone else noticed that if you check the long range weather forecasts on the web for Sunday 30th, every 12 hours it flips between rain/cloud/unflyable and great/no problem?)

Hi Mark, our posts crossed ... looks like they kind of agree Cool

I'm a kind of "low level to the northern boundary" guy myself ... except of course at Cranfield cos I know you lot like your tight circuits and steep descents Laughing

Craig, which weather forecast are you looking at there?

This one looks ok:

http://metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/14days.asp?zipcode=Abingdon

Says it's going to be sunny / cloudy with light wind. Fingers crossed!

Yep that's the one I use.

Yesterday it was saying that 30th was going to be a disaster!

But the day before it was saying it would be kind of okay.

I'm booked to fly this Sunday morning also, and it's doing the same. Breakfast at Connington if I can get there.

Looks like you are all one step ahead of me on the site plan.
I haven't seen a plan of the airfield yet so couldn't comment.

If anyone is flying down this way during the week, might worth passing Abingdon to have a look.

Does the plan say that the landing runway is 18/36 and the display is on 08/26 like last year.

Cheers
Martin

It shows landing on 18/36 and aircraft parking on 08/26.

Heli parking to the North of the showground this year (was to the South alongside 08/26 last year).

See your PMs!

Click here for link to Abingdon on Multi Map >>>

This might help to do a little bit of a "virtual flypast" if you can't get over there before next week.

It looks like the showground is in the same position as it was two years ago. The heli parking was indeed north of the showground two years ago.
The vehicle entrance gate is probably where it was last year. Any planks overshooting 18 won't take out too much, only two squaddies manning the bottom gate.

I will have a chat to the ATC guys on Saturday and see what the heli's arrival procedure will be for Show day. Will post what I find out on Saturday evening.
We'll see if they will allow low level approach to the heli park from the north to save you guys a bit of flight time.

Of course if they are landing 36 on the day then it' s straight up the field to the other end.

TC and Mr Wozza are you joining us at Abingdon.

See what they say on practice day.
Martin

Off to Sainsburys now!!

Hello all
Martin - The event is indeed set up the same as 2004 and earlier...

At the moment the Display helcopters (Merlin and Chinook) will be at the North of the site and the visiting ones... I've not decided yet.
Another Military one will be parked on 08.
The best thing to say at the moment is all make an approach for 36/18 and follow instructions - probably the marshallers.
Heli parking will be myself this year as Rotorwash is a criple... Very Happy
- That'll teach him to tangle with a tree. He is relegated to booking in.
See you there Gary
