From the article they've been given planning permission to operate 24hrs a day by the council ... not the same as having approval from the CAA for night HEMS. Transfers between approved landing sites can take place whether it's dark or light, so they may see an increase in these, if there's a need.

Scottish Ambulance Air Wing is a 24hr a day / 4 aircraft operation, and we don't do night ops into unknown sites. If there's a massive pileup next to one of our approved night sites such as Bute airstrip then we could attend, but that would be a fluke.

Call us back when the CAA approves HEMS at night...

Are HEMS in the UK using NVG's or are all operations still day only?

None of our bases use NVG for air ambulance/HEMS. Can't say for the other operators.
We're finally getting NVG for our police units, it's been a long time...and we won't be using them like we did in the military all those moons ago, they'll just be for use above 500ft.

Damn, no level NVG ops... such a shame.

I think in Norway NVG's are standard, but I guess it's essential when half of the year the north of the country is dark 24/7.
