Believe the helicopter involved is G-ROTG, an R44 Raven II.
Sad news. Thoughts with friends, family and colleagues. _________________ J.

Very sad news for the pilot's family and friends, poor chap.
It looks as if the weather was foggy/ misty in the background of the picture shown in the link.
I wonder if this was another case of controlled flight into terrain? |

Word on the street is he pilot went IMC and told ATC, in the process he kept the transmit open and ATC heard it all.
Sad, but even more sad is that this type of accident will never stop.

Perhaps they could introduce simulator training for PPL level to show just how dangerous this type of flight can be if you are not rated for it. Or at least bring more decision making into the training and highlight a students weakness's before granting a licence. |

Bit of a double edged sword, that. It must be extremely distressing for the ATCOs... but the AAIB will have some solid evidence of the accident. _________________ J. |

And distressing for any spotters?
Wonder if it will aid the investigation? I presume that the tapes would be seized and sealed for sound analysis but would a calm voice giving advice or vectors/heading/attitude information have been more use to the pilot? (I don't know what service he would have been getting or who could have relayed that information).
Another sad loss due to what appears to be the biggest killer for rotary pilots...

And other pilots on frequency.... (Haggy mentioned 'ATC heard it all' and I just naturally thought of ATCOs. ATSAs too, maybe?.) _________________ J. |

AAIB have published their report into this accident, which can be found here Robinson R44 Raven II, G-ROTG.
The report confirms HaggisHunter's 'word on street'. Unintentional IMC.
