I am just wondering where one can go to learn how to fly helicopters
And what the best place to go to learn how to fly choppers.

Question 2
Is I also am wondering how many hours of airtime you need to beable to fly a chopper alone. (I.e and the different types of certifications you can get on choppers lowest to highest)

Must you have airplane like Cessna experience or get your wings first before you can go into chopper operating ?

Typically how long does it take / how much does it cost to become a chopper operator.

Lots of flight schools out there and its a matter of choosing one that best suits your needs and delivers quality training. You can find a list of them here http://www.bestaviation.net/uk/helicopter_schools/england.asp. Also good idea to check on the CAA (Combined Aviation Authority) site to see for a list also (I think theres one on that too).

Your second question is quite loaded and haas a lot of sub questions but I'll attempt to answer as best as I can. The chopper seems to be your field of interest and there are various licences that are achievable but you have to do them in order. So it starts with obtaining a Private Pilots licence (PPL). This will allow you to fly for pleasure but does not allow you to work in the industry and be paid to fly. To achieve PPL the minimum requirement is 45 hour flight training and pass all the associated exams which are both written, aural and practical. See below for full list of requirements;
To get your PPL(A) to fly aeroplanes or (H) to fly helicopters you will need to:
•Pass a flight test after a minimum of 45 hours' flying training with an approved organisation
•Pass nine multiple choice ground exams
•Pass a practical radio test to get your Flight Radiotelephony Operators Licence
•Pass an English language proficiency assessment. This is taken at the same time as your radio test. If English is not your main language, you may have to take a formal assessment of English proficiency with an approved specialist language assessor.
•Pass a medical to get a class two medical certificate issued by an Aeromedical Examiner (AME). If your main reason for learning to fly involves future commercial flying, it might be worth obtaining a (more expensive) class one medical certificate from the CAA Medical Department at the very start, in order to reveal any previously unsuspected medical problems which might preclude commercial flying later, before spending too much money on courses and finding problems later.

If you decide you'd like to work in the industry you will need to further train to achieve a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL). This requires 155 hours of flight training and again there are more exams of the same format as PPL (written, aural and practical). Your PPl hours that you have completed will transfer over to the CPL licence training and you will have to complete the delta hours.

No you dont have to have any previous aviation experience to begin training.

How long should it take? Well that really depoends on how much time you can commit to it. If you can fly a few times a week then you can say that a PPL should be achieveable in a short space of time compared to if you can only fly once a week/month. One point to note is that the hour requirements are the absolute minimum that is allowed for you to qualify with. It will come down to each individuals learning and how well they progress. Some things can be learned more quickly than others.

Costs will vary from school to school. Its prerry hard to estimate a cost as again you may be all done at 45 hours for your PPL and get out of it at a resonable cost or it might take you 60 hours before your considered competent and a flight examiner is happy to certufy you as having met the requirements on the practical flight. All other exams have to be successfully completed too.
